Additional Information:

Even with the team responsibilities outlined and the project scope completed, everyone on the team is fighting about their role in the project. Some team members want to take on certain assignments, while others want only to contribute to a given phase in the project.

While talking with Jerry one morning, he confides in you that he has no experience in the task he has been assigned and resents other team members for being chosen for tasks he is better equipped to handle.

“Sorry to hear that,” you say to Jerry. “Do you think that management is aware of your skills and abilities?”

“I am not sure,” says Jerry. “Other than one of our first meetings when we all shared information with you, I don’t know if anyone has performed a skill assessment.”

“Boy, one of the keys to successful project management is an assessment of the project team expertise and skills,” you say.

“How can that help with the project scope assignments for the team?” asks Jerry.

“It can help to ensure that your allocation of resources, task assignments, and any budget and scope adjustments do not conflict with client or corporate goals,” you say. “It can also keep the project on its time line track.”

“Well, that would help with this project,” says Jerry. “You have a background in project management; is there any way you can educate the rest of the team on this subject?”

“Sure,” you say.

After your conversation with Jerry, you decide to bring up the subject at your next team meeting. You draft another document outlining the involvement of human resource management planning practices. You include how to assess the team’s skills, knowledge, and experience and why it is important to the project. Included in the document is your rationale on how to ensure that allocation of resources, task assignments, and any budget and scope adjustments will not conflict with project goals and will still support corporate strategies. As a part of team management, you will also want to discuss how to manage communications and conflict within the team.
