The writing assignment must be on either the death penalty or abortion. The writing assignment involves practicing intellectual carefulness and intellectual open-mindedness.Each writing assignment should clearly demonstrate interaction and engagement with at least one of the arguments or positions from the readings for this course.
The Writing Assignment involves three parts:
In Part 1, you will present one of the arguments discussed so far that either advances the view on the issue that you favor (e.g., abolishing death penalty, maintaining death penalty, pro-abortion, anti-abortion) or that you find to be the most plausible. You will practice intellectual carefulness by being sure to include all the relevant premises, assumptions, and explanations. The word count for Part 1:300 (minimum) – 600 (maximum)
In Part 2, you will offer what you take to be the strongest objection to that argument. This section will be graded on how well you exhibit intellectual open-mindedness, and you will be assessed on whether you provide a plausible and fairly formulated critique to your view or the argument you favor. Word count for Part 2:300 (minimum) – 600 (maximum)
In Part 3, you will very briefly state why you think the objection does not overturn the case for your view in Part 1.This section should not be substantively developed (as we will spend the rest of the term working on how to respond to objections).Word count for Part 3:50 (minimum) – 150 (maximum)
