Part 1: Deliberation video summary (needing word file)
DIRECTIONS: Watch this deliberation video and write a DETAILED, bulleted summary of the key points within the video.
You will be using this process in your project. THE GRID THAT YOU WILL BE USING FOR YOUR FINAL PROJECT IS IN THIS VIDEO. YOU WILL NEED TO WATCH IT TO SEE WHAT I’M REFERRING TO.
Part 2: Research articles (needing word file)
DIRECTIONS:
1. Find a minimum of THREE relevant articles to help you understand the nature of your topic. For instance, if you are researching the question of how we can reduce sexism, you would be researching what has been accomplished toward that end already. What’s the current research say on what is being done to lessen or address this system of oppression?
2. Bullet point the relevant aspects of each article. You should aim for one page of bullets per article.
The objective is to get background and current knowledge on your topic area.
You will take this information with you into your deliberation process. It will inform your final solutions sheet. You need to know what has happened or been done regarding the topic so you can think through additional next steps to lessen this type of systemic oppression.
Part 3: interview notes (needing word file)
DIRECTIONS: You will interview at least 3 people who can inform you on your topic either with their first-hand experiences or if they are an expert in the field.
The idea is to find out what people’s concerns are about this topic. These concerns should be taken into consideration when you deliberate to come up with your final three options/solutions for the grid.
Again, the idea is that you are gathering information that will support your rich deliberation process. All of these factors enter into the three proposed solutions sheet. Remember, a copy of that grid is at the end of the deliberation video.
It lists the solutions, actions that would need to be taken, and any drawbacks that are a result or possibility given the solution.
Part 4 : the project (needs word file and Prezi or Powerpoint)
You should give me the words to record the Prezi or Powerpoint slide by slide. The words in word file should be categorized by belonging to which slide, such as slide 1, slide 2 etc.
The outcome of this project is to research how we can lessen the impact of one system of oppression in our society, i.e., race, class, gender, religion, ableism, sexism, age, LGBTQIAA issues (heterosexism, homophobia, transgender oppression).
After reading related research articles on the history and current status of this system of oppression as well as interviewing people who are experiencing it currently (or did historically) or experts in the field, you will go through the process of deliberation (as outlined in the deliberation video) and come up with three proposals/solutions that would help address this system of oppression.
You will present these SOLUTIONS by creating a powerpoint or Prezi of the grid (a slide with the overall grid and then break out slides with the details) and recording yourself EXPLAINING EACH SLIDE over Zoom. You will turn in the Zoom recording of yourself INTRODUCING THE TOPIC FIRST, SETTING THE CONTEXT FOR THE ISSUE, AND THEN TALKING THROUGH EACH OF YOUR OPTIONS, AND RELATED ACTIONS AND DRAWBACKS.
USE the solutions grid AS SEEN AT THE END OF THE DELIBERATION VIDEO. Put your bibliography of sources (articles and interviews) as the last slide.
Examples of how you would frame your question might be: How can we lessen racism or sexism in our community? How can we address sexism across majors? Or address sexism in academia? etc.
You will watch the deliberation video to understand the process.
You will research a minimum 3 articles on the topic to gather background information.
You will interview at least 3 people to gather more in-depth information.
You will ‘deliberate’ and come up with three proposed solutions to lessen this kind of oppression. You will create a grid like the one at the end of the deliberation video and speak about how you got to those three proposals in a 4-5 minute Zoom presentation. You will submit the Zoom link here.
To recap:
Your presentation will include you narrating and walking us through a few intro slides (describing the topic, setting the stage, telling us your question) then going over your grid.
