Read Alice Walker’s short story “Everyday Use”. In this short story, the protagonist struggles with the social evolution of one daughter as she and her other daughter are left behind. Read the text carefully. Then, write a paragraph in which you make a defensible claim regarding how Walker uses details of setting to convey the protagonist’s complex attitude toward her daughters. In your paragraph, you should incorporate at least one piece of evidence from the text to support your claim.

In your response you should do the following:

1. Respond to the prompt with a claim that present an interpretation.

2. Select and use evidence to develop and support your interpretation.

3. Explain the relationship between the evidence and your interpretation.

4. Use appropriate grammar and punctuation in communicating your argument.
