After reading Lui and Gallagher, write about which policy you think would be best to redress racial inequality in the U.S.
Likewise, write about which step or steps you personally intend to take to improve race relations in your community.
You need to write at least two paragraphs and your post must connect to the class material and you must cite an external source for full credit. Also, you must write a reply to another student’s post! The reply post can be a short three-sentence response. However, the reply post must be meaningful and connected to the class material in some way.
POST 1
Raising the minimum wage is a necessary step towards providing families with the means to care for their households but that is just a start. What I feel we need is for schools to start teaching trades like they once did before. Carpentry, Woodwork, Electrical etc taught in a free school setting would help students get a head start to make the type of income they can actually live off of after high school. My little cousins in Texas were able to take their normal classes but also take classes that counted as college credit in high school. By the time they graduated from high school they had already obtained enough credits for a AA degree all while saving money. Here in Long Beach its a little harder to do that, and often you would have to do it at a college along with high school classes. We need to give our students the tools they need early on so they are prepared for life after high school.
In terms of the steps I personally take to improve race relations, I am doing everything I can to teach my kids through example. It all starts at home, it all starts with our young for they are our future, and even though we can educate ourselves while were older it is better to start out with a strong foundation. Keeping my door open for my children to come to me with questions and teaching them when to speak up and when to listen is one of the most important things I can do for them. Even more importantly is showing them how to think, talk, and fight for not only their rights or for the things that effect them directly but also for the rights of others who are mistreated, abused, and ignored by doing so myself. I have also taught my children to speak about these types of topics with there friends and cousins because I want them to be able to see things from other people perspectives without jumping on people for their differences.
