Cypress College Privilege and Intersectionality Discussion Questions

Need help with my Sociology question – I’m studying for my class.

introduction

In 1988 a feminist scholar Peggy McIntosh argued in her article  Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack that most whites, just like most males,  fail to both recognize and acknowledge their systematic privilege.  Privilege is a word used to capture the unearned rights, benefits,  immunity, and favors that are bestowed on individuals and groups solely  on the basis of their race, culture, religion, gender, sexual  orientation, physical ability, or other key characteristics. It is  difficult to identify how we are shaped by privileged because it comes  about as part of a natural process and is often outside of our  awareness. Not only that, but it is difficult to think about being  privileged in some way(s) when we may be struggling with various  problems of our own. It is an important step in self-awareness and  cultural competence to come to terms with how differently we experience  life from one another and how that has affected our experiences. This  short paper will help in the process toward becoming aware of privilege,  how it affects our lives, and how it makes us different from those who  are either more or less privileged than us.

Instructions

  1. Create a list of three ways in which you are disadvantaged as a  result of your race, class, gender, sexual orientation, age and/or  disability.
