For this assignment, you are given an opportunity to take a “deep dive” on assigned chapter 11 (page 239 – 258) from Creating a Lean Culture textbook, and then condense the key concepts into a short (5-10 minutes), engaging and effective teach-back video.
A teach-back is where a student/learner researches and analyzes a topic in depth and provides a concise lesson to others on what they learned. Effective teach-backs for adult learners can be in the form of a skit, a one-point lesson or recipe, or numbers of other innovative ways of teaching peers. Please note that teach-backs are not traditional presentations.
As you put together your teach back video, imagine your favorite kinds of YouTube (or other) how-to videos for when you need to learn something fast… what about those how-to guides are effective and attractive to you as a learner? How can you incorporate some of those characteristics into your teach-back?
Try to make your video as fun and entertaining as possible. Even though this is a “business” course, it doesn’t mean these videos need to look like something you would present for a Chief Executive Officer or at a job interview. Studies show that learning “sticks” better when lessons are relevant, amusing/funny, and relatable to the viewers. Feel free to show some of your personality! This is a skill that is truly useful in the real world.
The Teach Back video will be graded on:
1. Timing: 5-10 minutes with an appropriate pace (10 points)
2. Content: Top 5 points covered for topic accurately (10 points)
3. Effectiveness: Application of topic was correct and the examples were meaningful. (10 points)
4. Engagement: The video is both helpful and something the learners watching the video might retain over time. (10 points)
5. Personal presence: The presenter practices effective communication skills, including speaking loudly enough, speaking at an appropriate pace (not too fast), speaking clearly, and using technology and other tools (handmade charts, boards, examples, stories and research) in logical and meaningful ways. (10 points)
Notes:
1. Read your whole chapter, including the summary and study questions, so you get a broader context for your assignment
2. If your assignment is at the beginning of a chapter, remember to introduce the whole chapter topic
3. If your assignment is at the end of a chapter, remember to summarize the whole chapter
4. Remember that you demonstrate a deeper level of understanding on your topic – this means you will need to do additional research and not just regurgitate what you read in Creating a Lean Culture. It is your responsibility for your topics to help transfer the knowledge you have gained to the viewers, just like a doctor would do for a medical student, or how a chef would train an apprentice, and so on.
What could I also consider doing/talking about in this Teach Back?
Can I use external videos and resources in my Teach Back? YES. If you do this, you need to be able to make connections to why that video/resource is meaningful and pull out what our take-away should be.
