Cuyamaca College Understanding the Power of Language Discussion

Objectives:For this assignment, we will create an argument based on the combined points of others (called synthesis) by effectively integrating outside sources using MLA citations and creating works cited page.

Prompt:Using at least 3textsthat we’ve read and discussed in class, center a thesisdriven essay on the following: Synthesize the arguments: How do both literacy narratives by Malcolm XandHelen Kellerillustrate/clarify and/or extend on either Susanne K. Langer or Lera Boroditsky’s article?

Specific directions:To write your analysis, consult the documentation synthesis where it defines the terms associated with synthesis and provides an example of how you can write an analysis. In each body paragraph, synthesize one or both narratives with the article you have chosen. In these paragraphs, it may be necessary to summarize portions (called target summaries) of the texts. In your analysis, be sure you state explicitly how specific points in the narratives illustrate/clarify and/or extend one or more of the points found in Langer or Boroditsky’s article. You cannot synthesize one narrative to another narrative. You cannot synthesize one of the articles to one of the narratives. Instead, two narratives are synthesized with one of the articles. As you defend your argument, I also encourage you to bring into account your own experiences with language and thought, especially for those who are bilingual or are currently learning another language. This could be the last body paragraph part of the conclusion. I HAVE ATTACHED ALL THE NECESSARY INSTRUCTIONS/SOURCES NEEDED!
