Cuyamaca College Myeshia Research Question Responses

1-Myeshia’s research question is that she is interested in examining the mental well-being of individuals who have had a close family member pass from COVID-19. This type of question is casual. This research is a qualitative study because of the focus groups, the private conversations, and their opinions of a loss of a family member. The ethical guidelines for conducting APA research relate to cross-cultural research in psychology because the article says that Psychologists should seek to do no harm to their patience and handle them with care. Myeshia was not following one of the ethical principles and also caused harm by lying and not letting the participants leave when they were upset. The two specific principles that might be difficult to address when conducting research with participants from different cultures are Justice and Respect for People’s Rights and Dignity. The two things that would not be considered ethical are not letting the participant leave when they are upset and also not being honest about her study. Ways to make it ethical are being truthful about what the research question is and if someone feels uncomfortable then let them leave. A psychologist would need to consider Justice because there are many different laws and people have their own justices due to religion. They should also focus on Integrity because it will maximize benefits and minimize harm.

2- Myesha’s Research questions is whether or not Covid-19 Deaths affected the mental health of the family members of those that passed away

  1. It is a non directive question.
  2. The research is Qualitative because the answer to her question simply won’t be in numbers, if she is even able to find one.
  3. The Ethical Guidelines from the APA relate to cross-cultural psychology because the proper tools communications are necessary when dealing with different cultures.
  4. Prejudice and Racism.
  5. She was not allowed to tell her participants that they can not leave the research. It would be more ethical to tell the participants to leave if they felt uncomfortable. She also did not prepare them for the types of sensitive questions that she asked during the research. It would be more ethical to breif the participants before asking such shocking questions. Especially the way she disregarded their feelings the first time and kept asking sensitive questions.
  6. Psychologist need to consider the way other people are raised in their cultures. Maybe Psychologist should study the worlds religions and cultures before they conduct such research or even become a Psychologist.
