GEORGE ORWELL’S 1984

Write at least one detailed paragraph in response to each prompt. Use at least one quote for each of your responses, with the page number from the novel in MLA format.
You must respond to two prompts on George Orwell’s 1984, one from either #1 or #2, and one from either #3 or #4.

1. How are Winston and Julia betrayed?

2. How does the Party control history? Why?

~~~~~~ Choose 1^
3. In writing 1984, Orwell’s main goal was to warn of the serious danger totalitarianism poses to society. He goes to great lengths to demonstrate the terrifying degree of power and control a totalitarian regime can acquire and maintain. Give two examples of how Orwell exposes totalitarianism.
4. One big goal of the Party is to make the language “simpler”. There is a whole department responsible for publishing a new edition of dictionaries. Without a complex vocabulary everything tends to become black and white. What is the result of simplifying language? What’s the problem with, for example, news reports and other journalistic outlets putting public issues into simple, black and white terms? Base your response in what you have read in the novel!
