Cumberland University Ethical Dilemmas Discussion and Responses

After reading this week’s assignment and watching the video, begin to discuss your self-selected ethical dilemma with your classmates. Please work to give each other feedback regarding the ethical stance. Remember to be respectful because your classmate may have an opposing view and may disagree with your ideas, thoughts, and passion regarding the dilemma. If you are considering more than one ethical dilemma, allow your classmates to suggest a more interesting approach which may assist you in making a final selection on which dilemma is more important.

Ethical dilemmas are circumstances where a challenging choice must be made between two or more choices, neither of which settles the issue in a way compatible with recognized ethical norms. When confronted with an ethical quandary, a person must choose an alternative that does not match an established code of ethics or cultural standards, including codes of law and religious beliefs, or with their personal moral views of right and wrong. Investigate examples of ethical quandaries to discover how you may approach these challenging circumstances (Rogers & Sizer, 2010).

Balancing Family Life and Academic Responsibilities

Students have a demanding college life, and as a result, they do not have time to spend with their family and friends. Furthermore, they do not alleviate the stress of everyday life; thus, students endure increased strain as they advance in their academic careers. A lack of social interaction in life adds to more significant depression in a student’s life (Rogers & Sizer, 2010).

On the other side, learners do not emotionally engage with anybody since academics tend to conduct professionally, and a sense of connection does not exist between students and lecturers. Due to a lack of socialization, students are motivated to discover the world of drinking and drugs, which eventually affects the ethicalness of one’s lifestyle on campus. Students must participate in their preferred sports to work off their anxieties in a physically demanding environment. Regular physical activity is an excellent way to help people regain their concentration.

Failure to Show Respect towards Teachers and Co-workers

Students lack respect for their classmates and professors since they acquire self-centered attitudes that prevent them from considering the rights of others. With the flow of time, college students develop the practice of bothering others during courses. Teachers use a harsh disciplinary approach to deal with challenging pupils, yet this strategy does not help deviant individuals straighten out their personalities (Pope et al., 2009).

Learners, on the other hand, become more unsettling after obtaining penalties. Psychological counseling does not appeal to students because they do not want to have their personalities questioned. They must always seem challenging in front of the students. A kind-hearted lecturer can always get to the heart of the characters of challenging pupils.

Racial Issues on Campus

In recent times, social and racial problems for non-native students have grown significantly, and as a result, we must make the campuses better. Also, pupils must practice patience in order to tackle these situations with care. Since a student attends college to acquire an education, he or she must constantly retain his or her concentration on academics. One may combat bad racial politics on campus by focusing on the development of industrial skills that will help students flourish as productive workers throughout the future.

You must resist the temptation to respond aggressively to racial difficulties in order to graduate on time. Students do not even have time to spend in college since they must enter the labor market to locate appealing employment that will sustain them. Racial challenges also aid in the development of influential personalities, which you may use to achieve future professional success.

An Ethical Dilemma is a situation in which there is no obvious right or wrong decision, but rather a right or right answer (Ghillyer, 2021, p. 8). In most of the cases, a person’s moral values make them choose between multiple options, however, in certain conditions, most of the options align with the person’s moral/ethical values and that’s when there will be an ethical dilemma to choose the right option among them. The ethical dilemma I would like to discuss for this week’s discussion post is whether to inform a colleague/friend that he is getting terminated by the end of the month.

For one of the projects, my team hired a contractor to help with several tasks. In no time, we became good friends at work, and we used to go out for lunch once a week. We collaborated on several tasks within this project and could finish them on time. My manager, my manager’s boss (Director), and I were in a meeting to update the status of the projects to the Director. In this meeting, there was a discussion about the completion of the project the contractor was working on and they decide to stop using the contractor’s services from the month-end which is like 3 weeks from the day of the meeting but choose to inform the contractor just a week before the last day. My ethical dilemma, in this case, is to keep this information confidential to myself or inform the contractor about this so that he could start looking for the next projects.

By analyzing the consequences, if I choose to keep the information confidential, then the contractor would be caught by surprise if they tell them about the termination with a week left and less time to find another job. Ethical dilemmas may force you to choose between being honest and dishonest, or between what you know is right and what you know is wrong (Hes, 2018). In this case, I convinced myself to inform the contractor about his last day of work and asked him to make backup plans if in case the project ends by that day.
