Background
The British stood alone against the Germans until 1941 when the Russians and the United States entered as an ally. Except for limited Lend-Lease help from the United States, the British relied solely on their colonial possessions for financial support. Even with the United States’ entry, colonies provided substantial economic support over the war’s entirety. The British colonial crown jewel was India, and like in World War I, the subcontinent provided support that was invaluable to the British victory. This support is why the British kept their economy afloat before the war and helped economic recovery afterward. Support came from across the country’s social and economic strata. Much of the support would fall on India’s lower classes, who shouldered a disproportionate amount. While Britain and its people were recovering financially from the war, the Indian lower classes faced a burden for many years. Analyzing the regressive nature of India’s financial support is an essential element of any study regarding the colonial support of Britain.
Thesis
India was a significant financial supporter of the British during the war. However, this support’s burden fell on the lower classes of India, who could ill afford to provide it. Therefore, the Indian working classes would suffer financial hardship during the war and after the war disproportionality to Britain and the Indian industrialist class.
