CU Qualitative and Quantitative Research Methods Discussion

Prior to beginning work on this discussion, read sections 1.2 1.3. 1.3.2.1 and 5.2 in the Newman (2016) textbook and the instructor guidance for the week. This discussion has two parts.

Compare and contrast characteristics of qualitative and quantitative research approaches, including such aspects as sample size and type of data. Briefly explain the difference between experimental and non-experimental research.

In Part 2 of your post investigate the following research design

: qualitative research

In Part 2 of your post,

  • Explain the characteristics and purposes that define the research category.
  • Briefly describe some of the data collection and data analysis methods that are used in this type of research.
  • Mention one or more of the specific research designs that fall into your category.
  • Suggest a research topic for which this type of research would be suitable.
  • Use at least two scholarly/peer-reviewed sources and document them in APA style,

I have always been keen on trying to understand the human mind. Though I love the idea of how the human mind functions and how nature vs nurture, affect people differently, I have always been fascinated with serial killers and how some of them are able to live what appears to be a normal life with a family. With these two topics in mind, I would have to say that there are three scientific methods to explore. The first being that of developmental psychology. As Newman (2016) explains, “Although this field initially focused on childhood development, many researchers now study changes and key stages over a person’s entire life span”. When people study a serial killer, they usually go back and try to explore the idea of there were any telling signs that something was off, this explores both the relationship with their parent(s) and how they interacted with other kids or animals.

Secondly, I would like to choose the scientific method of social psychology, due to the nature of how one’s mind is shaped by those around them and how they choose their partners. This is something that has a deeper explanation within the mind of a serial killer that has a family of their own. As I have come to learn one main thing about serial killers, and that is that they are a majority of the time, they’re found to be a sociopath. Meaning they have no feelings of right and wrong, they do not feel empathy for others; so, they basically learn to mimic the act of caring!

And thirdly, I’d examine the scientific method of cognitive psychology because this is the broad study of the mind. This is the true study of the ways that people learn and think, what their mental process is and how it works. This will help in understanding how most serial killers are well cultivated. The mind is a wonderful thing to explore. Psychology is a diverse discipline, encompassing a wide range of approaches to questions about why people do the things that they do (Newman, 2016).

In Part 1 you will be comparing and contrasting the differences and similarities of the two main types of research: (qualitative and quantitative), as well as giving a brief explanation of what we mean by experimental and non-experimental research.

  • Qualitative research is research that describes something. An example would be if a researcher was performing a survey asking people to tell them their favorite pizza toppings. Qualitative research and data is made up of variables that cannot be easily measured. These numbers and data are gathered differently than quantitative as a researcher may perform a survey with open ended questions, or discussion groups.
  • Quantitative research is research that describes the amount of something. Previously I used pizza toppings and in quantitative we then measure the amount of people that like a certain pizza topping. Quantitative research and data is made up of variables that can be easily measured, or quantified. These numbers and data are gathered differently from qualitative is these experiments are usually recorded in numbers and are performed with surveys that are closed and limited in option and observations.

In Part 2 of your post, use the University of Arizona Global Campus Library to investigate one of the following research design categories based on the first letter of your last name: Experimental research

Experimental research is a type of method that has strict guidelines in performing the experiment and gathering the information. The data is quantitative as it can be measured, calculated, and compared to other data. Examples of this research method could be coffee consumption and mood disorders, or nicotine consumption and heart disease.
