Achieving Successful, Purposeful Outcomes
Yuen et al. (2013) indicate that the use of the logic model in program planning and thinking assist an organization with evaluation. The components of the logic model begin with the community need followed by inputs; activities; outputs; immediate outcomes; and end outcomes (Yuen et al., 2013). In order to effectively evaluate the implemented program using the logic model a research question must be developed that is related to the community need identified in the first step of the logic model process. Carr (2015) explains the benefit of creating a question that is “specific, data driven” (p. 69). The example in the text cautions against having too broad of a research question or one that is loosely defined (Carr, 2015).
With respect to the expansion of the Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) at Pioneer Human Services, the research question relates to the effectiveness of the program in treating those who experience opioid use disorder (OUD). The question that will be utilized to do so seeks to understand if the program is decreasing the number of participants who are actively using opioids in an addictive manner.
Research Question: Does MAT program participation help individuals addicted to opioids stay abstinent during treatment?
The objectives and the activities will drive the data collection that will assist with analyzing the effectiveness of the program. The objectives that relate to this research question are outlined in the SMART goals that have been developed for this program. They involve enrolling MAT program participants in treatment, engagement in relapse prevention, etc. The activities that will take place to meet these objectives involve tasks such as development of the program, referrals and intake, prescriptions for the MAT, individual and group therapy, peer counseling, etc. Data will be collected, for example, regarding the number of participants enrolled in the program, the number of relapses within the program, attendance by participants to individual and group therapy sessions, etc. The MAT grant funded by SAMHSA will assist Pioneer Human Services with the expansion of the MAT program by enabling it to fund the objectives and activities that will lead to the answering of the research question and accomplishment of goals.
