According to Tsao (2016), there are real benefits human service agencies can generate by using data and predictive analytics. These benefits include cultivating diversity, expanding financial opportunities, and expending service areas. Data can be used to increase the efficiency of early intervention initiatives by determining specifically where and who will benefit from it (Tsao, 2016). The Problem Gambling Center of Las Vegas where I am gathering and analyzing data can certainly benefit from data analytics. By using data PGC can move the organization to target its services to the population that need it the most. For example, the literature shows that upwards of 8% of the population is addicted to some form of gambling causing them to lose their ability to control gambling impulses (PGC, 2018). However, casino workers are three times more likely to become pathological gamblers then non casino workers (Sacheli, 2013). So far, I have determined that only 23% of current PGC clients work in the casino. Using this data indicates there is a large untapped market of potential clients PGC could serve by targeting casino workers.
However, there are some ethical pitfalls that can occur with using data. Tsao (2016) discusses ethical and legal concerns when data is used too broadly as it can sometimes be inaccurate which can create discriminatory policies. Also, different data sets may impact an entire culture if the data is not collected ethically or if researchers are unaware about that culture. So far, the only ethical concern for my project will be maintaining confidentiality of the clients. I have implemented a coding system that will shield clients names as I complete the project.
