Draw on one or more of the assigned readings for this class to identify three fruitful questions for discussion. Offer independent reflections (2 paragraphs) on one of those questions.
A “good” question, for purposes of this assignment, is something that you couldn’t just google and get an answer. So, for example, if the assigned reading was the Declaration of Independence, I would prefer that you not pose a simple factual question such as “Who drafted the Declaration of Independence”? A better question, for purposes of this assignment, would be something like “When the authors of this document wrote ‘all men are created equal,’ who did they have in mind?” or “Does all the religious language in this document suggest that the founders understood the new nation as a Christian one?”
The “discussion” part of this assignment is more open-ended. Sometimes you will pose a question that you genuinely don’t know how to answer. In that case, a successful discussion might elaborate on why you posed the question in the first place, or it might ponder how one would go about answering the question, or it might offer a tentative hypothesis. The goal here is simply to show us engagement and independent thought.
