CSULB Psychodynamic & Cognitive Theories to Unipolar Depression Analysis

Point 1: Though using different terminologies, both Psychodynamic   and Cognitive Theories suggest two important psychological contributors  to unipolar depression: 1) intense self-criticism (a critical  superego/negative self-talk) and 2) beliefs that others are rejecting or  unhelpful (loss of object relations/negative expectations about experiences with others). 

Point 2: Harry Harlow did research on “parental” comfort provided to  monkeys and how they used that comfort to interact with their  environment. Assuming something similar occurs in humans (and it does,  we call it attachment style), this has implications for the emotional  and social development of children.  

Point 3: Let’s assume that children with a consistently “cold” or unsupportive parent versus a comforting parent might grow up to be more vulnerable to depression. Actually, there is research supporting the impact of attachment style on depression.

Your assignment is to watch the video below called HARLOWs MONKEYS and write a reflection addressing the following:

A) -what’s your personal reaction to the video as connected to human development?

B) which depression “contributor” noted above (self-criticism or  rejecting/unhelpful others) might be most impacted by “cold”/unavailable  parenting? 

C) How might the second depression contributor develop from “cold”/unavailable parenting as well?
