For this assignment, you will choose a topic that is of interest to you, from local to international in scope. It can truly be any topic that piques your interest/concern, but it absolutely has to have received media/news attention in the form of pictures. You will sift through this imagery and choose one image that best represents this topic to you. The image should be visually interesting to you, illuminate the topic you’ve chosen, and exemplify how you feel about it.
You will first watch the amazing KCET-produced documentary on La Raza, embedded below. You will then read the two articles that are linked below the video. After you’ve completed all of that, you will address the assignment on the following page.
You will then write about:
1. Why is the image powerful? You will approach this answer from two positions – objectively (what is happening in the image) as well as subjectively (how does this affect you at a gut level). Above this first paragraph, you will include the image you are writing about as well as the name of the photographer and the news source where it was printed.
2. How does it exemplify your concerns on the topic? You will cover three concerns about the issue that are present in the image (or the image leads you to consider).
3. What compositional traits/techniques (from the One Image assignment) are utilized in the picture? Please provide at least three.
You absolutely need to include the name of the photographer and the source from which it was obtained. You need to include the image in your submission. Note: if Latinx issues are of concern to you, you may use an image from La Raza if you wish. This should be answered in 3 paragraphs. The rubric below provides further detail on the requirements of this assignment.
