CRJS 2002 Walden University W3 Changing Views of Delinquency Discussion

When is rebellion simply a phase? Imagine a group of youths are caught hopping a fence to consume alcoholic beverages on a closed beach. Some may consider this simply to be a rebellious act. Does your definition of “rebellious” apply no matter the socioeconomic status of the youth? The fact that delinquent acts can be seen as a phase marks a change in attitudes toward youth and what may be excusable.

In this Discussion, you consider how both societal and legal changes related to youth have changed the concept of juvenile delinquency.

To prepare:

  • Your Instructor may post a contemporary news story or other current example of a juvenile crime occurrence; alternately, your Instructor may invite you to find your own example.
  • Read the Instructor’s posted contemporary crime story or refer to a story you researched.

Post:

  • Based on your observations—either professional, personal, or both—to what degree have societal and legal changes related to children and youth changed how juvenile delinquency is viewed?
  • Refer to the contemporary or current event example and the Learning Resources to illustrate your position.
  • You may also incorporate professional or life experience to illustrate your position.
