Part 2:
The Ban the Box movement has become a controversial topic. Some argue that the movement is
helpful in addressing labels of criminals. Others argue that the movement might actually worsen
the labeling issue.
In 2-3 pages, write an essay on labeling theory and Ban the Box in which you address each of the
following:
(1) Explain labeling theory in detail.
a. Explain the main components and concepts of labeling theory (i.e. primary and
secondary deviance, master status)
b. Explain the labeling process.
(2) Explain the Ban the Box movement and its relevance to labeling theory.
a. What is the purpose of the Ban the Box campaign?
b. How does the Ban the Box movement apply to labeling theory?
(3) Take a stance on whether you support the Ban the Box movement and explain your
reasoning.
