creative exercise

We have now seen a handful of ways that art leaves the gallery/museum wall or the journal page and moves (or tries to move) into the fabric of everyday life, into the streets: the Russian futurists’ face-painting; Tatlin’s tower, with its radio station and projection screen; UNOVIS propaganda boards and lithographs and painting on buildings, trams, and so on.

For this exercise, propose a work of art that would exist in public space. What is the purpose of such a work? (Hint: you may also wish to consider the changing meanings of public space; for example, does designing a monument-as-building carry the same weight in a global pandemic as in the aftermath of the October Revolution? If you want to shock the public, why and with what aim?) How will it achieve your work goal? What medium/approach will you choose?

Represent and describe this work, its aims, goals, and materials; 500 words is a ballpark figure and not a word limit.

In representing the work, feel free to make use of any medium you feel most comfortable with: drawing, sculpting, photography, photomontage, digital… the choice is yours. We evaluate not on the level of your artistic skill but on depth of thought and engagement with course material.
