1. Writing is an artform, like music or painting. (After writing all those formal papers in your education, it may be difficult to imagine.) Yet in the three pieces from class (2 are personal essays and 1 fiction, a story), you’re able to witness the authors’ aesthetic, the open form, etc. What distinguishes personal essays from formal ones is their open form, flexible organization, first person and/or second person, a hybrid of emotional / logical argumentation, the intimacy with the reader: their aim can be to persuade or to allow you a glimpse into an intimate space. Create an argument in which you argue for the personal essay as an artform, reviewing the different strategies the authors use to create certain effects.

You may also include “The Company of Wolves,” though you need to make the distinction that it is a fiction. Just be sure to include your premier focus on one personal essay.

I will also post “Moths” and “A Piece of Chalk” for your viewing, as examples of personal essays.

Basically its a 3 page essay (can be a quarter of the 4th page but atleast 3 pages) and it is going to basically be on creating an argument on how these essays can be an art form (my rough draft will probably be long the lines of “a person freely creating a work with no boundaries set for themselves is an art form because like music or dancing everything comes out natrually instead of being held back by certain rules
