Tool: Adobe creative cloud: Photoshop
Topic: advertisement poster for Jansport backpack
Idea: I am going to create an advertisement poster for Jansport, a well-known and revered brand for producing backpacks. I feel like on TV and even YouTube there frequently are ads for Crest, State Farm Insurance, and McDonald’s but none for a backpack enterprise. Anyway, I think I will try to create an 80’s vibe as I’m feeling nostalgic for a retro vibe.
Teacher comment: Good idea. I definitely think a retro vibe is smart for a brand like Jansport — and will be pretty fun to create, too. Color palette and typography are two of the easiest ways to create a retro feel. Check out some ’80s/’90s print advertisements to get a sense.
Teacher’s Project instruction
The goal of this project is for you to create an original design. The topic can be of your choosing: an advertisement, movie poster, marketing material for an actual event, etc. You need to design an original advertisement – NOT something that a brand/company has done before (ie – don’t just recreate an existing advertising campaign. You are, however, allowed to use existing slogans, logos, etc.)
In lieu of an advertisement, you may design a movie poster based on an existing film. Again, your poster should NOT reflect that original poster design, but needs to be a new approach.
Tech Specs:
- The document size should be: 1200px by 1500px by 72 resolution (note: you may flip horizontal or vertical orientation depending on your design)
- Keep aesthetics in mind (white space, rule of thirds, symmetry/asymmetry)
- You can use your own photos/graphics or photos/graphics you find online or a combination of the two
- If you find photos online, make sure they are large enough.
- In addition to text, you must include at least 3 separate assets to your advertisement
- Any photo or graphic is considered an asset
- Some of you will include only 3 additional assets, others will include many more → keep in mind the virtue of “white space”
Remember that this class is called Visual Storytelling – so try to tell a story with your design! You will be graded on the following…
You will be graded on:
- Creativity (20%)
- Technical Proficiency (20%)
- Adherence to Guidelines (20%)
- Complexity of Project (20%)
- Effectiveness in Conveying Message (20%)
What you will need to turn in:
- JPG version of your advertisement
- PSD version of your advertisement
- A short description (1 page) of your design – what you were hoping to achieve, challenges you faced, aesthetic considerations, etc.
