Integrating Theory, Multiculturalism, and Self-Awareness”>Acquiring Counseling Skills: Integrating Theory, Multiculturalism, and Self-Awareness

Question#1-

On page 57 in the case example, it indicates that “not only was J. my friend, he was my resident advisor, so I really expected him to be able to listen well and help me with my problem. (It’s funny… I no longer remember what this problem was, but I certainly remember his unhelpfulness.)”

It is clear in the above quote that attending behavior is not just about physically being there but about really listening to the client with your whole being. Clients can easily sense whether or not you are giving them your full attention, however, what methods can we, as the therapists, use to check whether or not we are fully attending?

Question#2-

On page 57 of chapter 4 the author talks about the importance of room arrangements. Not so much what was in the room but how it was oriented played a part in what clients preferred from their counselors. “Haase and DiMattia (1970) noted that clients prefer to interact with their counselors across the corner of a desk, rather than having a piece of furniture between them”. With this in mind, how will you orient your session area to best fit your clients as well as your own needs? How would this change in virtual sessions or over the phone sessions?
