Counseling Project: Conceptualization and Treatment Plan 2 Instructions

Overview

The Counseling Project is divided into 3 parts: The Case Summary and Presenting Problems and 2 Conceptualization and Treatment Plans. This counseling project is designed to help you make application of course content to a counseling situation so you can understand how to effectively engage in case conceptualization and treatment planning. The Conceptualization and Treatment Plan 2 paper is the third of three papers for the counseling project. You will use the case summary your created in your first paper to guide your conceptualization and treatment plan for this paper. There may be some overlap between the two papers regarding the client’s history and problems.

Instructions

Below is the format you are to use for the Conceptualization and Treatment Plan 1 paper. The paper is to be six to ten double spaced pages, not counting title page, abstract, and references page. Current APA format is required. At least 6 academic sources are utilized, and one must be the Corey textbook. References should include books and scholarly articles published within the last five years. (Note: Websites are not considered scholarly sources for this paper.) The entire paper should be written in third person. Use the current APA manual for the proper headings format.

Title Page

Refer to your current APA manual for directions on formatting a title page. Be sure you include a running head, page number, paper title (Case Conceptualization Using <place the name of your chosen theory here>), your name, and the institution name (Liberty University).

Abstract

Your abstract must give the reader a short overview (150–250 words) of your paper. Be sure your abstract summarizes the main ideas in your paper and what conclusions you came to. Use your current APA manual to be sure you write an effective abstract. Note that the abstract is not an introduction to the paper.

Below you will find the topics and structure you are required to include in your paper. For this first CTP paper, you are to choose one of the theories listed below:

  • Behavior Therapy
  • Cognitive Therapy
  • Cognitive Behavior Therapy
  • Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy
  • Choice/Reality Therapy
  • Feminist Therapy
  • Solution Focused Therapy
  • Narrative Therapy

Spend at least two pages explaining the theory you have chosen and answering these questions. Separate each question into its own paragraph, and use sub-headings:

Overview of (place the name of your Chosen Theory here)

Provide a brief introduction.

Origen of the Theory

Who is/are the developer(s) of the theory? How was it developed? What influenced the development?

Beliefs about Human Nature and the Counseling Process

What did they believe about human nature and the counseling process (role of the counselor, role of the client, any main assumptions and concepts of the theory, therapeutic goals,)?

Research

What are the major contributions and limitations of this approach? Explain any research studies that have been done showing the efficacy of this theory. What diagnoses has this theory been shown through research studies to be effective with (depression, anxiety, etc.)?

Compatibility with Diverse Cultures

What are the strengths and limitations of this theory in addressing issues regarding diversity, multicultural, and social justice issues in individual counseling? Discuss how you would modify the theoretical intervention to make it appropriate for diverse cultures to overcome any limitations.

Appropriateness for Crisis Intervention

Can this theory be used in crisis situations (e.g. natural disasters, violence, sexual assault, suicidal ideations)? Why or why not? Again, cite sources to support your positions.

Christian Worldview Compatibility

In what ways is this theory compatible (minimum of three) with Christian beliefs? In what ways is it not compatible (minimum of three) with Christian beliefs? You MUST clearly delineate each compatibility/incompatibility for the reader, for example: “The first compatibility with Christianity is . . .; The final incompatibility is . . .,” etc. Consider using scripture, the Tan textbook, other books, and journal articles for this section.

Case Conceptualization Using (place the name of your Chosen Theory here)

In this section you will explain how you make sense of a client’s presenting concerns in the context of a theoretical framework. You will discuss how you understand the pseudo-client’s symptoms, personality characteristics, cognitions, feelings, and behaviors in the light of this theory.

First, write a short paragraph giving a synopsis about the presenting problems you wrote about in the Case Summary and Presenting Problems paper (step 1 in the inverted pyramid model). Detail is not needed, just a quick summary to remind the reader of these problems.

See Schweitzer and Rubin’s Inverted Pyramid Method steps two, three, and four in chapter three of the textbook to help you with case conceptualization skills.

Use your judgement and critical thinking skills to discuss any identified thematic groups in step 2. Step 2 you will use one of the 4 thematic groupings (descriptive-diagnostic approach; clinical targets approach; areas of function and dysfunction approach or intrapsychic areas approach). Note: it is important to know about the descriptive-diagnostic approach; however, it is not expected that you will have the skills to use this one since you have not taken a diagnosis class yet. Step 2 is an atheoretical grouping based on the presenting problems. State which of the 4 approaches you used.

Step 3 is where you will apply a counseling theory. Use the theory’s concepts and language to further dig deeper into the reasons for your client’s concerns. For example, if using CBT, you may group by maladaptive cognitions and maladaptive behaviors. You can write down specific data points from the case study. For example, Sally exhibited automatic thoughts of “I am dumb,” “I am not smart which exacerbated” her depressive symptoms and social anxiety.

Step four gets you to offer the deeper core issue using your counseling theory that is driving step three groupings and client concerns, problems identified. Example: Sally’s core belief needing to be disputed is “I believe I am a failure and unlovable.”

Evidence Based Considerations

What makes this theory appropriate for your client and their presenting problems you noted in the first paper? It is essential that you understand how to identify evidence-based approaches so try finding research studies that support the use of the theory with the client’s issues.

Ethical Considerations

What are any potential ethical issues that may arise using this theory with your client? Make sure to cite the specific codes of ethics for your specialization (e.g. ACA codes, AAMFT codes).

Cultural Considerations

What are any potential multicultural issues that may arise using this theory with your client? There are always cultural issues to explore even if you are the same gender and race. Discuss how you would modify the theoretical intervention to make it appropriate for working with your client’s culture.

Theoretical Interventions

Second, based on the theory you chose above, you are to have a minimum of three different interventions/techniques pursuant to that theory. You must also clearly define each intervention from the other (i.e., write in three separate paragraphs with the name of the technique/intervention clearly shown in a level 2 heading [flush left and bold] in each paragraph, not just one long paragraph).

As you write about each intervention/technique, discuss how it helps to address the identified problems. You need to then give at least one example of how you would use that technique with your client.

Spiritual Application

What spiritual challenges can you see in this case? How would you seek to handle this person’s case if they were interested in having Christian Counseling be a part of the treatment plan?

Prognosis/Outcome

What you would expect the outcomes of using this therapy would be, and what will some of the most challenging aspects of the treatment be? What referral recommendations and resources would you recommend. Again, use outside sources to support your conclusions.

Theoretical Orientation

How closely does this theory align with your own beliefs and values about human nature, problems, how clients change, and the role of the counselor and client? What aspects of this theoretical orientation might you integrate into your own perspective? Discuss the concepts that you would want to include as a basic part of your own personal counseling style if any. How likely are you to consider this theory for your own personal theoretical orientation? Explain.

References

One of your book sources must be the Cory text. You must have a minimum of five additional scholarly references for your paper (minimum total of six). Websites are not allowed, and neither are dictionaries, encyclopedias, or mass-marketed popular psychology texts. Edited books and journal articles are always your best sources. Be sure you format your references in current APA format and pay close attention to capitalization and italics. It is your responsibility to have this manual and use it. Using a website about APA is not the same as having the manual.

Writing Skills

Make sure to double check your grammar and spelling, writing skills, and APA format. It is essential that you use higher level thinking skills such as synthesis, analysis and evaluation in case conceptualization. Please make sure you paraphrase information in your own words, cite sources appropriately and avoid relying on direct quotes. Only one direct quote per page is allowed. Make sure to appropriately cite sources. Look over your originality report from the SafeAssign plagiarism tool to make sure you do not have any instances of unintentional plagiarism and paraphrase any highlighted information.

Please also see Liberty University’s Writing Center for both writing skills and APA resources.

Note: Your assignment will be checked for originality via the SafeAssign plagiarism tool.
