This assignment provides you with a template for defining and measuring complex concepts. It will provide material for your research proposal.
A list of critical components follows, but think in terms of synthesis of these components rather than a step-by-step recipe to follow.
- Please read my document on “Complex Concepts.”
- Pick one concept related to your research. I may ask you to do a quick literature search to make sure the concept is viable.
- Deconstruct the concept into two levels, as discussed in my memo. Rarely will the authors do this for you. As you deconstruct the concept, pay particular attention to the following questions:(a) At Level 1, what concept/s serve to establish contrast? (b) Is the concept continuous or discrete? (c) What are the dimensions of the concept at Level 2? (d) How are these dimensions related? Does the author/s specify conditions of necessity and sufficiency? Or is the concept structure one of family resemblance?
- Select three peer-reviewed articles that measure your concept in your research context. We will execute this search in class and you will keep a log in a designated Canvas assignments. Use precise descriptions. I should be able to tell how and why you select your four articles.
- Catalog the empirical measure(s) for the concept.
- Identify the patterns you see in the four articles. Make those patterns explicit.
- Ascertain the consistency between concept and measure(s). In particular, do you consider the measure(s) to be valid empirical proxies for the concept’s dimensions across the three articles? Does the context of each article allow for different measures?
- Explain how you might define and measure your concept for your own research project. Explain how your proposed research models fits in the context of the models you examine.
1,500 to 1,800 words.
