Description
There are four analysis papers throughout the quarter. Each paper poses a number of specific questions, which will vary from paper to paper and reflect our current class focus. The prompts will be posted to the assignment website. The papers will vary slightly in length given that the prompts will differ. Most papers will run about 6-10 pages. There are usually 6 questions per paper and each question takes about a page or so to answer. Each question includes a detailed rubric for scoring. Please read these to know exactly what is being asked of your answer.

Questions
1. Provide an example of a relationship that moved from high uncertainty to low uncertainty because of self-disclosure. In your example, explain how the relationship existed during high uncertainty, how disclosure occurred along the dimensions discussed, and how the relationship existed in low uncertainty.
2. Provide and discuss an example for three of the six relational dialectics. In each case, identify and describe the dialectic, provide an example, and explain how the example demonstrates the dialectic.
3. Explain why the “Mehrabian number” is incorrect. Next, provide an example that illustrates how display norms shape nonverbal communication. In this example, identify the nonverbal channel, provide the example, and explain why the example shows how display norms shape nonverbal communication.
4. Discuss media affordances. Provide an example and discuss the example in terms of two media affordances we discussed (e.g., message durability, control over presentation, etc.). Finally, explain how the example illustrates an affordance rather than technological determinism.
5. We read and discussed boyd’s take on impression management and collapsing contexts. Provide an example of impression management and explain how this illustrates boyd’s ideas. Next, discuss how collapsing contexts might make this example of impression management more challenging.
6. For this question, we’ll conduct an experiment. Get on a website that uses algorithms to make recommendations for you (YouTube, Twitter, or Facebook would be good. No porn sites.). Follow its recommended links for 20 or so recommendations. Now write up your results. How did this experience illustrate concepts from our discussion of algorithms, homophilia, AI bias, and social sorting? Your answer should spend a paragraph documenting the experience (what website did you use, what recommendations did it keep feeding you, how did where you stopped relate to where you started?). Next, identify two insights about the course concepts (algorithms, hemophilia, AI bias, and social sorting) based on your experience. Here you should make a claim and support it with evidence from your experience.
