Communication Analysis of the Self Questions

1. What roles do you take in groups (such as workgroups, school groups, etc.)? To identify the roles, go to the list of roles in your text or on this site: /files/media/group-roles_0.pdf” rel=”noreferrer noopener” target=”_blank”>https://www.amherst.edu/system/files/media/group-roles_0.pdf. (Links to an external site.)

2. Why do you think you take on these types of roles? Do the roles differ based on the group?

3. When do you enact maintenance (social) roles versus task roles? What do you think this reflects about you as a group member

4. Go to the notes/readings about Shutz’s FIRO theory. Can you see a relationship between the roles you tend to take and the types of needs that are being fulfilled for you? Explain your answer.

5. In your future career, what roles must you enact to succeed in groups? Why? How will you use your communication to express your needs to others? What will you look for to understand group members? Use FIRO.
