What do you see as the relationship between art and
commerce? Ground your answer in a historical
perspective, offering examples of how this relationship has
manifested—or perhaps changed—through some of the
various periods we’ve discussed in this class. How might
this relationship need to be navigated in the future, as we
seek to address contemporary political and economic
challenges around the world?

• Polished formatting and a page length that meets the requirements of the
assignment
A response in the “B” range will likely have the following characteristics:
• An argument related to the question at hand, though it might not clearly
make a unique contribution (e.g., one that simply rewords the question,
repeats material from the class without demonstrating critical insight and
nuance, or fails to directly respond to the prompt)
• A regurgitation of relevant examples used in class materials
• Writing that is free from major grammatical or typographical errors
• A page length that meets the requirements of the assignment
A response in the “C” range will likely have the following characteristics:
• No clear argument or a thesis that ignores a major portion of the prompt
• Too few or poorly explained examples, or examples that do not appear to
be relevant
• Major or consistent grammatical or typographical errors
A response in the “D” range will likely have the following characteristics:
• No clear relationship to the prompt listed here
• Failure to meet the page length required
A response in the “F” range will likely have the following characteristics:
• No assignment turned in by the deadline indicated
• Elements of plagiarism, either via improper citation or no citation of
outside materials, unapproved collaboration between students, turning in
