Communication and Media
Prior to completing this discussion, read Chapter 13 in your textbook. The media of communication not only display many aspects of culture, but they also act as conduits of culture and agents of cultural change. Different cultures make different use of media, and the media of different cultures may treat the same subject matter very differently. This may be particularly apparent with coverage of news. Select a current global topic in the news. (e.g., climate change, the Israel and Hamas conflict in Gaza, the world economy, nuclear proliferation, etc.) Read the coverage of this topic in a major United States news outlet (e.g., The Washington Post, The New York Times, CNN, Chicago Tribune, San Francisco Chronicle, NPR, etc.) and in a news outlet of another country (Pravda, International Herald Tribune, Al-Jazeera, BBC, NHK, CCTV, etc.). Identify the issue you chose; analyze and discuss how the two news outlets differ in their perception of the issue and how the coverage reflects the culture of the country in which the news outlet is based.
Please Note: Online versions of most major U.S. newspapers, along with English versions of many foreign newspapers, are available free on the Internet. For foreign newspapers, simply search using the name of the newspaper and the word “English.” The University of Arizona Global Campus Library also provides access to a robust collection of newspapers. You can click on the “Newspapers” button on the library homepage to access them.
