Film: Circle (2015)
This assignment is an opportunity to apply the concepts you have learned in class, as well as engage in some critical self-reflection about your own biases and world-views. The assignment requires you to watch the film Circle (2015)**, and write a 2-3 page, double-spaced, critical reflection of the film. Please read through the following details thoroughly and contact me if you have any questions:
**Film: Circle (2015); available on Netflix and other streaming platforms. Please double-check the film title and year as there are other media with similar titles. Please contact me if you have trouble accessing the film.
Assignment Criteria:
1. You will apply concepts from chapter 11 (Culture, Communication, & Conflict) and/or concept(s) from chapters 8 (Understanding Intercultural Transitions), 10 (Culture, Communication, and Intercultural Relationships), or the Martinez et al. (2016) journal under the module for chapter 10. Please note that compared to the first film analysis, you must apply concepts from chapter 11 and have the choice to venture to the other reading materials, but can also just draw concepts from chapter 11. Please apply a minimum of three concepts to thoroughly explain and apply in your discussion.
2. Your paper should follow the following structure:
- Introduction: Provide a very brief summary of the film, the characters that are relevant to your discussion, and preview what your paper will discuss.
- Body (Analysis):
- For each construct from the text that you apply, you will define the construct (please use APA/MLA formatting guidelines when paraphrasing or citing verbatim) and explain how your construct can help explain the relevant interactions you are discussing. This is where you apply what you have learned in class to what you are seeing depicted in the film (you do not need to discuss the entire film; I am looking for key interactions that happen in the film), so you need to observe the interactions and link these to what we have read about and discussed in class. You need to make sure that you are as descriptive as possible and that you provide a good argument for why and how your constructs are represented in the film.
- At the end of your analysis, I want you to engage in some critical self-reflection and discuss how the film’s portrayals of intercultural interactions that you have observed/applied either align or do not align with your own world-views and biases, OR how this analysis has expanded your worldview and given you insight into how to navigate intercultural interactions.
- Conclusion: Provide a summary of your discussion and conclude with a final thought for your reader.
3. Format: 2-3 pages of text, double-spaced, 12 pt. Times New Roman font. Please use either APA/MLA formatting for any references (e.g., textbook) you need to include. You do not need a cover page. You do not need to cite the film.
Please submit your paper in .doc, .docx, or .pdf formats.
