Victims of domestic violence face many special problems that require special solutions. The most obvious special problem is that partners are exposed to constant danger because they live in the same homes as their attackers, are usually emotionally and financially dependent on them, and often are raising children together. Assailants are often viewed as otherwise law-abiding of the community, so victims are likely to be blamed or fault themselves. If they have children in common, battered women run the risk of losing parental control if the violence takes place in front of them or if the estranged father is better off financially and seeks joint or even sole custody. Some conflicts may escalate to the point that one partner or the other gets seriously injured or killed.
