Cognitive Development in Early Childhood Reflection

1.  Think of a concept that you’re interested in working on – be creative.  It should be some psychological quality (emotional, physical/physiological, observable behavior, or a thought/cognitive ability).  Describe your concept briefly.

2.  Come up with a working “theory” of how your concept “works”.  That is, describe how the concept comes about, what factors impact it, when and where (that is, which situations) you typically find this concept.

3. Purposes of Research:  What is your PURPOSE for studying this concept?  That is, talk about WHY you’d study this concept – exploration, description, and/or explanation?  Talk about what you might hope to learn.

4. How would you OPERATIONALIZE this concept?  Be as specific as possible – you may have to specify a particular research method/technique that you’ll be using.

5. Are there one or more DIMENSIONS (facets) to this concept?  Discuss.

6. What would your concept look like as a NOMINAL variable?  State this clearly.  What would it look like as a RATIO variable/measure?

7. Finally, come up with a simple, creative 5-item SCALE that could be used to measure your chosen concept. Discuss/explain why you created/chose the items that you did.
