DIRECTIONS FOR PRESCHOOL OBSERVATION
Please watch this video 3rd observation part 1 – YouTube and follow the below instructions when writing. Please see attached example of the outline.
Age to Observe: 3- 5 year olds (At our child development center that is the Large Pre-K)
Where to Observe:
The assignment requires that you visit a preschool setting (licensed child care center or preschool) to observe preschoolers’ behavior, record raw data, evaluate what you observed, and then write a paper based on your findings.
PLEASE NOTE: Due stay at home orders. Your observation will completing based on your observation a 33 minute video that has been posted
Raw notes should be in T format, cover 33 minutes of observation, noting time and include evaluation notes and references in the right column. These should be very messy and reflect your original observation. They do not have to be grammatically correct, spelled right or even completely legible. While your observation is still fresh, jot down notes in the right hand column as to what examples of development you are seeing.
PLEASE NOTE: Due stay at home orders. Your notes may be typed on a word document but they must follow T format. You may then attach your word pages to the end of your paper. For those that hand write their notes you can scan those pages or take pictures of them and upload them along with your paper.

What to look for and write about
Part 1. Description of the Child (Bullet points)
Describe the child you have chosen just as you see him/her. Include:
- General description (face, hair, clothing and approximate size)
- Why did you choose this child?
Part 2. Biosocial Domain (Outline format)
Include:
- Motor Skills (Large and small, coordination, activity level, endurance, proprioception (Body awareness), kinesthetic awareness (sensation of bodily position, presence, or movement) Is the child graceful and balanced in movement or gawky and unsure?
Choose one of the topics in the parenthesis to write about. You must include:
- A detailed example from your observation. Using your Raw Notes, provide a describe of what your observed the child doing.

Important!
- Your observations must be supported by the text and cited. Your goal is to determine where the child is developmentally based on information from your textbook.
- Be clear and detailed in your observations. For instance, it would not be adequate to say, “The child could roller skate.” Rather you should include detail to say, “The child was wobbly on roller skates. She would move one foot in front of the other in a walking motion with her arms extended out to her sides out to steady herself. After about 10 feet she fell down.”
