CMIT 326 UMGC CloudWatch AWS Services IT Managers & Operational Data Discussion

This week’s module covered some of the cloud monitoring and autoscaling techniques. You were able to use CloudWatch, one of the AWS cloud monitoring tools.

Think about how you might use CloudWatch in your deployment as you answer the following questions. In addition to your primary forum response, post at least two follow-up responses to your classmates.

  • Pick a resource and data set that CloudWatch monitors and collects. How would the use of CloudWatch make a difference in your cloud maintenance? How will you use the data gathered by CloudWatch?
  • Will you recommend CloudWatch as an added feature to your cloud deployment? Why or why not?

Respond to David:

CloudWatch can be used to monitor AWS resources and applications. CloudWatch logs can be

gathered and analyzed to improve operations. Using CloudWatch you can correlate metrics and

logs and determine the health and performance of your resources. You can create alarms which

could help with automation of actions. The information gathered would help with establishing a

baseline and then alarms set when behavior outside of those norms is observed.

I would recommend CloudWatch as an added feature to my cloud deployment. CloudWatch’s

automation feature alone is a nice feature that would allow you to monitor your cloud platform

without having to hire additional administrators.
