CLC Womens Beauty Standards and Institution of Marriage Discussion

I’m working on a sociology discussion question and need guidance to help me understand better.

1. In the video lecture “Killing Us Softly 4,” Dr. Kilbourne argues that advertising today creates a toxic cultural environment where our own choices and values are too often sacrificed to those of the advertisers and their corporate interests. She also argues that advertising dismembers and objectifies women.

  • How does Kilbourne define the social problem? What evidence does she give of objective conditions? What are her subjective concerns?
  • Provide at least one example from the film that you believe supports either a conflict, functionalist, or symbolic interactionist interpretation of the social problem.

Also, share one recent unique example in advertising that either continues or counteracts this trend. You should include a link or image with your post

2.

/why-are-fewer-americans-getting-married”>https://www.pbs.org/newshour/show/why-are-fewer-am…

each of these videos consider the institution of marriage and how it is always evolving. In your post, answer the following questions:

  • What did you find to be the most interesting form of marriage discussed in the video and why?
  • What is your reaction to the radio clip on student loan debt? Is student loan debt a threat to marriage for you (i.e. would you marry someone with significant student loan debt)? Why or why not?
  • If age at first marriage is increasing, women are having children without being married, and marriage rates overall are declining, what does this mean for society? Consider this last question from one of the theoretical perspectives- functionalism, conflict theory/feminist theory, or symbolic interactionism.
