Coram Nobis Case Analysis: Minori Yasui v. U.S. (1943); Gordon Hirabayashi v. U.S. (1943); Fred Korematsu v. U.S. (1944)
- Purpose
- Provide students to have a second opportunity to use their critical thinking and writing skills by utilizing the I.R.A.C. (Issue, Rule, Analysis and Conclusion) Method.
- Provide students an opportunity to point out how Asian Pacific Americans have exercised their rights and responsibilities as citizens at the local, state and national level by analyzing 3 Landmark US Supreme Court (Coram Nobis) cases.
Instructions
1. Review the information on the following U.S.Supreme Court cases: Minori Yasui v. US (1943); Gordon Hirabayashi v. US (1943) Thind v. US (1923) and Fred Korematsu v. Federal District Court (1944). The information on these court cases are in Module 4:
2. Watch the video clips and documentary on Yasui, Hirabayashi and Korematsu by accessing the links in Module 4.
3. While drafting your written response, spend most of your time and energy on the analysis portion of the I.R.A.C. process.
4. The Rule of Law that you will be applying to all 3 court cases is Executive Order 9066 and Public Law 503.
5. After you have completed writing your I.R.A.C. analysis, please include a few sentences (2-4) expressing your opinion/insight on the 3 cases.
6. In your case summary analysis you are required to include a response (about 1-2 paragraphs) on how the Coram Nobis cases are exemplary examples on how Asian Pacific Americans have exercised their rights and responsibilities as citizens at the local, state and national level.
