SHOR stands for Student House of Representatives; it is a Mock version of HOD. Each school has an opportunity to get a voting delegate similar to Trustee, so each school counts a component in the SHOR. Each school should have two CDHA sponsored student delegates which they can address any issue or difficulty they might have is their schools at the House. These two students can have a major role for their school and other students to make a motion. These two students get to have voting priviledges at HOD. The voting priviledges include being actively involved in the decision making process because this is their profession.
In this event, I learned so many new things that I did not know before, so I would mention Friday’s CDHA meeting was informative and beneficial for me. I learned that CDHA had developed policy and bylaw statements representing the organization’s official position for topics of the dental hygiene profession. Before the event, I did not know whose count as CDHA members. I learned that CDHA comprised their members, the students’ members, who we all are included, the out-of-state members, and the allied professional members. I also learned that CDHA operates at both local and state levels. The state-level includes the officers and councils. President, president-elect, secretary, VP admin, VP Membership, and immediate past president all are members at the state level.
To be a member of CDHA is very beneficial and essential for every dental hygiene student or RDHA. One of the reasons is we, as future hygienists our voices will be heard by CDHA members, and they are going to represent our voice to the federal and provincial decision-makers. Another benefit to being CDHA members is that once we graduate from school and get licensed, they will help us find a job. They can also help us develop leadership skills and knowledge of issues we might face as hygienists when we work in practice.
