Chaffey College Confederate States of America Discussion

Need help with my History question – I’m studying for my class.

In February, 1861, representatives from seven southern states met in Montgomery, Alabama to draft a new constitution for the country they were creating known to history as the “Confederate States of America.” Within two months a terrible civil war had broken out between the Federal Government and the breakaway states. History hasn’t been kind to the memory of the Confederacy, which, without apology, endorsed slavery. But some other provisions of the new southern government were interesting. One provision of the new Confederacy restricted the Confederate President to a single, six-year term with no reelection on the theory that the traditional four-year term was too short and that it placed a premium too much on campaigning skills and not enough on governing skills. Today it seems as though many presidents accomplish little in their first term since they are fixated on securing their reelection. If a President knew that they had only one term, they might push right away to get things done that they wanted enacted. In addition, nations such as France and Mexico, which have established a presidential system similar to ours, have also opted for longer terms. What do you think? Is the six-year term something that might benefit the United States today? Presidents Lyndon Johnson and Gerald Ford also endorsed the idea several decades ago.
