Chapter 5: Disucssion: Sensation and Perception

Choose only ONE question per topic, and write a coherent, well-organized essay, using concepts from the text of no less that 350-400 words (Three full Paragraphs) that responds to the question in its entirety. Following direction from section 5 (grading system) of syllabus–write clearly, include what you have learned in this unit without copying, cite your source, and apply the concept learned to the topic chosen. Read directions carefully and cover all aspects in a logical, well-organized essay. For full credit, remember to use a quote and list the textbook as reference at the end.

  • Respond to two other student”s AP’s.
  • You will need to post your AP first before you will see other students work.

Here are this week’s choices:

  • Conduct this experiment. Invite friends or members of your family to look out a window along with you in silence. After about 5 minutes, gather everyone together (AWAY from the window view), and give each person a piece of paper and a pencil. Ask them to write what they observed without looking out the window again. Share your observations. In your essay discuss the results of the experiment, addressing the following questions: Did everyone notice the same things? Why or why not? Can you detect elements of the scene that you all saw? Why do you think these “stood out.” What made some aspects of the scene more interesting to some people than to others? Did some people notice things that weren’t there, and if so, why? What senses were used by each observer. Use 2 or 3 textbook concepts related to “sensation and perception” to explain and defend your results.

  • First Paragraph: After completing the lecture experience “Perception Effects”, write about how some of these illusions could effect your own experiences. Remember “perception is how we take this information and develop mental representation of the world”. Second and Third paragraphs: Next, using these experiences, discuss a time when you were very excited about doing something or meeting someone. How did your expectations of the event affect your perceptions of the actual event? Relate what you write to top-down and bottom-up processing as described in the textbook. You must define both these concepts and show how they relate to your personal example. Note: this is will require critical thinking skills to integrate these concepts together with your example.

Note: This topic is a mandatory area of psychology that has to be learned and observed. The illusions on the lecture page may be confusing at first, but they are designed that way as they challenge your brain’s capacity to process the information. However, if you have difficulty viewing the examples and web page from the p.4 module lecture page: “Perception Effects”, email me ahead of the due date for an alternative assignment.

This is one of my favorite units! We are looking at how our bodies take in information from the world through our senses and how this effects our perception of people, relationships, and events we experience. This Weeks’ lecture includes a fun activity that allows you to experience some illusions. Take the time to experience these and begin to think about how this effects your relationships and perception of others. If you can’t access the web page put the web address in the search bar and go directly there. If this assignment is difficult for you to view please email me for other options.

The following video is a documentary that reviews various scientist around the world who are conducting research on the psychological and biological effects of how perception and our senses interface and effect our sense of reality. This is a lengthy video but gives a clear explanation of how sensation and perception relate to psychology and human existence. Spend time watching all of this video to get a complete understanding of these concepts in relation to psychology.
