Cystic Fibrosis Transmembrane Conductance Regulator (CFTR):

Exercise in Scientific Presentation (150 points)
Scientific progress depends on extensive research before a researcher may decide
to create and conduct any experiments. Because you are a scientist in training,
you will be completing a scientific presentation detailing what you know about
the Cystic Fibrosis Transmembrane Conductance Regulator (CFTR) protein. In your
presentation, answer the following questions below as you put your knowledge of
CFTR together with new findings from scientific publications and/or credible
websites. You will be asked to not only provide background on the clinical
symptoms of a patient with Cystic Fibrosis, but also to think about how a
mutation in the CFTR gene results in these symptoms.
Specifically, this project is going to be a PowerPoint presentation where you will
be presenting information to the class about a particular variant (mutation) or
pair of variants that cause Cystic Fibrosis. You will investigate one variant that you
will be assigned in the following scenarios: 1) on its own with an unknown variant
on the other chromosome, 2) on its own on both chromosomes, and 3) with a
known common CF variant. Not completing the presentation will result in a 0, so
please start early.
If you have issues with bandwidth or are unable to access a microphone for this
presentation, please let me know ahead of time. I will ask that you instead type
a transcript for your presentation (almost like a movie script) and send that to
me along with your presentation.
Please use the format presented here but do not retype the questions. You can
insert images into this document if you would like so long as you create it or
provide a source for the image. You may choose to add more slides if necessary,
but please keep your presentation to a maximum of 5 minutes. This is a strict
time limit and you will be stopped at 5 minutes so we can go through all the
presentations.
Remember, that all of the information you included in the following presentation
must be in your own words, or it is considered plagiarism. Do not use quotations;
concentrate on summarizing the information in YOUR own words. For each
section in which you plagiarize, you will receive a zero. If you turn in the same

presentation as someone else in the class, you will receive a 0 for the entire
project. If you need information about what plagiarism is, please contact me.
All presentations must be saved as a PowerPoint presentation (with either a .ppt
or .pptx extension) and submitted to me in Canvas. All presentations are due by
Sunday November 28th at 11:00pm. Please pay attention to the grading rubric
prior to answering the questions for this project. Do not rewrite the prompts.
