Grading guide:
- If essay does not deal with the films: 100 points off
- If essay deals only with your personal experience without linking it to the films: 50-100 points off
- Each typo or grammatical mistake: 1 point off (Example of what NOT to write: “I become tired every time the subject was brought up”)
- Contractions: 1 point off (each time) (Example of what NOT to write: “I’d rather be swimming than reading”)
- An awkwardly-written sentence and/or nonsensical sentences: 1 point off (each time) (Example of what sort of sentence NOT to write: “She veered on the topic when talking towards the presentation”; “The Spanish colonized California before it was sold to the French”).
- If you do not write down the word count at the end of the essay: 10 points off
- Each word under 500 words: 2 points off
- If you do not write the name of the films as a title: 5 points off
- If there is no evidence that you actually watched the documentaries (because what you wrote doesn’t match up): 100 points off (Example of what kind of sentence NOT to write: “The film about Chunky tells about his life growing up in New York City”).
- If the essay is not in paragraph format: 20 points off
- If the essay is just one paragraph: 20 points off
- If essay is not submitted on time: 20 points off for every hour after the deadline
- If you plagiarize: F in the class
- If the essay focuses only on superficial, irrelevant, or trivial things: up to 100 points off. Example of what NOT to write: “The speaker wore a beautiful diamond necklace that sparkled when she spoke about Mexican immigration to the U.S. I wish I had a necklace like that one. Diamonds are my best friends.”
- If the essay is just a summary of events: up to 100 points off. Example of what not to write: “First, the speaker said that Latinos make up 18 percent of the population in the U.S. Then she said that 60% of Latinos are of Mexican ancestry. Then she said that the second largest groups are Salvadorans, Guatemalans, and Colombians. Then she said that…” Please do NOT do this.
