Here is the rubric for this essay:
Rubric for 500 word essay on two short documentaries
Please write one 500-word essay on two short documentaries that you will watch on your own time outside of class.
The documentaries are available for free on YouTube.
The first one is called “Valentia: Mexican-Americans in World War II” – KVIE https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q1_3VPSf3Ns&t=80s
The second one is called “Soldado”
I am asking that you watch the Valentia documentary first.
These are some of the questions that you can address in your essay: What did you feel while watching the films? Did your feelings change over the course of the documentaries? Did these films challenge the way in which you normally think about Mexican masculinities? If so, how? If not, explain. Did these films challenge the way in which you normally view patriotism in the U.S. If so, how? If not, explain. Was there anything that surprised you in the films? How did the film Soldado differ from the film Valentia? In what ways were they similar? Did these films change your mind about anything?
The essay can be more than 500 words, but not less. I will not take points off for grammar and typos after the first 500 words, otherwise I would be penalizing students who wrote longer essays. The essay can be written in the first person (for example “I learned…”). Please do not just summarize the event.
