we have read about the factors contributing to the growth of gangs/gang membership, and the organization of gangs. Here, discuss with each other why you think (a) some gangs persist over time, while others do not, and (b) the factors that contribute to changing gang structure.

1. In this discussion, I think some gangs persist over time due to the power and control of these gangs. This can be informed by ways of quality and quantity, therefore the number of associates within the gangs or how much power they have over authorities would interrupt the system. These gang can are seen as an image or an organized group and or a safe haven to some. An organization of sort allow opportunities to appear to achieve a higher goal and expansion, thus persistence continues to flourish. Also, this “safe haven” would be considered for those looking for a place to feel welcomed too, whether it is because of past trauma or so on. Gangs would be a sad, but true path the young people would take to believe this is ok due to their beliefs and viewpoints. On the other hand, the reason as to some other gangs do not persist is because they lack these factors, simply weaker than their competitors. Limited amount of area in control, quantity within the group, and power. Now, factors to which are a contribution in changing structure can be similar to what has been stated above, as well as some more to be informed such as the media and era. The media plays a critical role during this time, changing the everlasting nature of actions of society, this would include gangs. By which people view these groups can finalize their change to continue onwards or end. As for the era, thinking abut the future generation is what’s concerning, to how they simply react to these group on what seems right or wrong can impact how these gangs will continue to thrive.

2. There are a number of factors that contribute as to why some gangs persist over time while others do not. I think a main reason would be the size of the gang and the age of its members. It has been found that the younger one is when joining a gang, the more likely they are to “disengage” from the group. When it comes to the size of the gang, it is more likely that one will continue on when there are more members involved. This is because it is easier to fill slots when one leaves because there are more members able to recruit others. As well, the values and comradery one feels within the gang can lead members currently in to stay longer. As mentioned in the lecture, members can sometimes leave because they feel as though the gang does not have their back. An example was when one member got incarcerated and no one in the gang went to go see him or take care of his family while he was gone. Therefore, he felt as though his participation in the gang was not worth it and therefore left.

Factors the contribute to a change in gang structure can, first, be when a member of a higher status leaves the gang. This opens up an opportunity for other gang members to take the spot of the one who had left. No organization or cohesion can also change the structure of a gang because if there is not one person in charge, then there may be chaos and the gang is unable to come to an agreement on certain topics, causing one person or another to take charge in order to bring the group together.
