As we reviewed this week, one has to be careful to avoid using fallacies when making an argument. Just as important as avoiding fallacies in your own writing, it is critical to make sure that the sources you are using for your work do not contain any fallacies.
There are three general categories of fallacies, each containing a number of specific fallacies:
- Fallacies of Evidence
- Fallacies of Logical Order
- Fallacies that are Faulty Forms of Emotional Appeal
With the types of fallacies in mind, find a news article that contains a fallacy. Read the article, and write a summary. After your summary, discuss the type of fallacy you have identified in the work. Describe the specific type of fallacy used in the article and how you were able to identify that fallacy. Do you believe the author had a purpose for using this particular fallacy? What is the danger that could be a result from this particular fallacy being used?
