The Argument:
To Vape or not to Vape? Is Vaping a safer alternative to smoking cigarettes?
Choose to be Pro or Con
Proponents (pro) believe- Vaping is a safer alternative to smoking traditional cigarettes. They do not contain the many known carcinogenic ingredients that cause chronic disease and death. They also allow people a method of smoking cessation that will help them quit the use of nicotine altogether.
Opponents believe (Con)- E-cigarettes are potentially explosive devices that addict teens and young adults to nicotine and most likely cause unknown serious health problems.
Research 3 Key Pro or Con points about the Vaping debate depending on what position you choose. You will only represent either the Pro side or the Con side. NOTE: You can take either side of the issue despite your personal beliefs.

For this discussion, I am taking the con position because even though it is promoted as a safer alternative as compared to smoking, it could result in a multitude of problems, which include health and oral problems. For instance, according to ProCon.org (2021), vaping among kids is skyrocketing. As a result, it addicts a new generation to nicotine and introduces them to smoking. Statistics highlight that 1 out of 5 school-going children vape. This is highly contributed to the fact that the tobacco industry is aware that flavored tobacco products are appealing to youths. As a result, they take advantage and market them in a wide range of candy flavors and fruits. In her article, Lindsley Konkel highlights the health risks of vaping. Konkel (2017) notes that the vapors mess with immunity and bloody sores have begun showing up in teen vapors. Maziak (2020) notes that smoking is a habit-forming activity. Without the aid of smoke or nicotine, almost all experts believe that the physical activities connected with smoking are habit-forming. As a result, arguments that e-cigarettes assist smokers quit smoking quickly appear to be inaccurate, and they may potentially establish harmful habits in previously non-smokers.ReferencesKonkel, L. I am taking the Pro side which is stated for this assignment as: “Vaping is a safer alternative to smoking traditional cigarettes. They do not contain the many known carcinogenic ingredients that cause chronic disease and death. They also allow people a method of smoking cessation that will help them quit the use of nicotine altogether.”1. Vaping and smoking cause serious health concerns, but vaping seems to be the lesser of the two evils and a safer way to ingest tobacco. Procon.org states that “best estimates show e-cigarettes are 95% less harmful to your health than normal cigarettes.” They don’t contain as many carcinogenic ingredients as cigarettes, carbon monoxide and tar being the most notable examples. E-cigarettes also seem to be safer for indoor use, according to procon.org, “researchers found that the level of nicotine on surfaces in the homes of e-cigarette users was nearly 200 times lower than in the homes of traditional cigarette smokers.” I think that vaping and smoking should both be strictly avoided as a general rule, but I also think that vaping is a safer alternative to smoking because of the above information.2. In addition to vaping being safer than smoking cigarettes, it can help to cause a reduction in the number of smokers. According to procon.org, “cigarettes smokers who picked up vaping were 67% more likely to quit smoking.” The website also states that e-cigarettes, used in vaping, “are twice as effective at getting people to quit smoking as traditional nicotine replacements such as the patch and gum.” If used wisely as a tool to help someone overcome a nicotine addiction, I think that vaping can be helpful and help a person to transition out of the habit. 3. Using e-cigarettes as an alternative to traditional smoking could potentially reduce healthcare costs. Sally Satel, MD, remarks that “given that the direct medical costs of smoking are estimated to be more than $130 billion per year, along with $150 billion annually in productivity losses from premature deaths, getting more smokers to switch would result in significant cost savings — as well as almost half a million lives saved each year.” I think that these statistics are hard to overlook when considering the pros of vaping, but it is important to consider the healthcare costs that would still exist, since vaping is also harmful to health.
