To read and evaluate peer-reviewed journal articles in the field of behavioral neuroscience, and to write an APA-style research paper. The assignment will guide you through this process.

Important note on this Word video below: this is actually the 6th edition instead of the 7th edition of APA style. Everything is still correct EXCEPT you WILL want to bold your title and references, and you will NOT have a running head (both of the Template papers linked to above are correct)

**Use this Guide from Columbia College (BC) (Links to an external site.) for how to cite your sources in APA style in your reference section AND how to cite in your in-text citations. Also, how to make sure you are paraphrasing correctly (see tabs “how do I cite?” and “in-text citations”)***

Choose an agnosia from this list of 3 agnosias:

undefined

-Prosopagnosia

undefined

-Broca’s Aphasia

undefined

-Wernicke’s Aphasia

undefined

Next, your task is to locate at least 4 references for the agnosia you choose. References should be peer-reviewed journal articles, books, or other scholarly sources and should be included at the end of your paper in APA format. At least TWO of the references MUST be peer-reviewed journal articles. Here is a research guide from our library to help you find these sources.- https://moorparkcollege.libguides.com/c.php?g=7278…

the tab “Find articles/periodicals” to find your peer-reviewed journal articles. If you would like to use a website, apply the CRAAP test: CRAAP Test link (Sites that have passed the CRAAP test: apa.org; nih.gov; medlineplus.gov)

Total Possible Points: 150

undefined

Title Page: 10 points

Abstract (one paragraph): 20 points

Introduction (one paragraph): 20 points

Associated Brain Areas:

first paragraph (lesion study summary): 20 points

second paragraph (fMRI/PET study summary): 20 points

Discussion:

first paragraph (conclusion): 10 points

second/third paragraphs (research proposal): 30 points

Reference List: 20 points

Typically 4- 5 pages (please do NOT go over 6 pages) not including the title page and reference list. You will need to be concise!

undefined

It is conventional to paraphrase instead of quote in APA format, therefore to practice this skill, DO NOT QUOTE. Every sentence should be your own creation!

undefined

How to write each section: (note: use the resource list above to help you with the APA formatting)

undefined

  • Title Page. Must be in APA format.
  • Abstract. A brief summary of your paper (one paragraph). Must be in APA format and include keywords.
  • Introduction (one paragraph). Use in-text citations to cite the research in APA format. Remember, all in your OWN words. Use this Guide from Columbia College (BC) (Links to an external site.)for how to cite
  • One paragraph:

Define the agnosia

Describe specific symptoms of the disorder (if there are technical terms, you need to explain them)

How is their life affected by this agnosia? (how does someone’s life with this disorder differ from others without the disorder?)

  • Associated brain areas (List this as a Subheading in your paper). (Two paragraphs). Use in-text citations to cite the research in APA format. Remember, all in your OWN words. When technical terms are used, you need to explain them so that I understand that you understand! In these two paragraphs, yo uwill be exploring the brain regions associated with this agnosia. Your job is to:
  • first paragraph: Describe in detail one peer-reviewed lesion study (often, this will be an MRI (“structural imaging” or “anatomical”) study where persons have sustained damage to a region of the brain, which resulted in the agnosia). In your own words, briefly describe the
  • methods (what task did the participants do? What type of imaging did the researchers use?),
  • results (what did the researchers find?), and
  • the conclusions that can be drawn from the studies (how did this research impact our understanding of this area of the brain?).
  • second paragraph: Describe in detail one peer-reviewed fMRI or PET imaging study of persons with this agnosia. In your own words, briefly describe the
  • methods (what task did the participants do? What type of imaging did the researchers use?),
  • results (what did the researchers find?), and the
  • conclusions that can be drawn from the studies (how did this research impact our understanding of this area of the brain?).

undefined

Discussion

  • one (short) paragraph: What does this agnosia teach us about brain functioning and how the brain helps us to interpret our world?
  • one to two paragraphs: Propose one original research study (either a behavioral or somatic intervention) that could help to answer a remaining question about the agnosia. Clearly describe
  • The remaining question you are seeking to answer

your hypothesis,

  • the methods you would use to test your hypothesis,
  • the results you expect to observe, and
  • what it would mean if your hypothesis was supported (conclusion).
  • HERE is a SAMPLE from a previous student so that you can see what these paragraphs should look like

Grading criteria:

undefined

You will be graded on how complete and clear your sections are – information should be accurate, relevant and clear.

  • Did you develop you topic in a purposeful, thorough way?
  • Did you support your claims with logical reasoning and relevant, accurate data and evidence that demonstrate an understanding of the topic, using credible sources? Did you include these as in-text citations?
