Conduct an hour interview with an individual or family from a culture different from yours. Use higher order questioning and interview skills that require the interviewee to reflect and provide thoughtful explanations and elaborate on the content being discussed. Modify your interview to respond to any preconceptions or misconceptions the interviewee(s) may have about how their culture/ethnicity is perceived by others. Write a 5-7-page analytical paper that analyses the interview in relation to the current theory and literature relative to the represented cultural group and that responds to all the elements listed below:
- Develop a brief, informed consent form that is signed by the individual you interview and attach it to the paper. Please do not identify the individual or family in any part of your report.
- Given the chosen cultural group, answer the questions through the personal interview: (note: Attention should be given to socio-economic level and degree of assimilation and acculturation).
-
- What cultural characteristic should a counselor/psychotherapist be aware of to be more effective with this group?
- What kinds of experiences or activities would help a counselor learn more about these characteristics?
- Are there intergenerational issues identified in this group? Adjustment to mainstream cultural issues?
- What are the value systems held by each group in regard to:
Role of different family members/family structure
Children’s behavior
Work
Education-learning
Success
Religion
Language
Interpersonal relations
Food
Traditions
5. What are the perceptions (sets, stereotypes, etc. of this ethnic group toward others/groups)?
6. Which stereotypes held by you relative to this group were influenced?
7. How does the information derived from person to person interviews relate to descriptions, ideas, philosophies, and worldviews of theorists/authors about the group chosen?
Given the information derived from theorists/authors and person-to-person interviews concerning the group chosen, what are the specific implications for the counselor and other helping professionals in working with members of the group. Cite examples:
Is there a therapeutic model or approach more appropriate for working with this group? Why or why not?
What is the impact of non-verbal factors in working with the chosen group?
