Carrington College Boise Neurotransmitters Impacts Psychoactive Drugs Discussion

As you have read in your readings this week in Chapter 4 about how drugs affect the brain. “Every day most people in the world use drugs that alter brain activity and consciousness (Levinthal, 2001).” Think about how many people in the world drink coffee or energy drinks or sodas and even tea and all of these drinks contain caffeine. Are you one of those that say, “I cannot function without my cup of coffee?” That coffee that you must have is considered a drug due to the caffeine that is in it.

In this week’s discussion you will: Explain how psychoactive drugs can affect the brain by changing the behavior of neurotransmitters or receptors. When you hear the word psychoactive drugs what kind of drugs first come to mind? What type of psychoactive drugs are listed that you did not realize fall into that category?
