Capella University EBP Research and Quality Improvement Discussion Paper

Part A

***The first step in the EBP process is developing the PICO(T) question. In your first discussion activity this week, you will explore the PICO(T) question within the context of an evidence-based practice intervention and reflect on what you have learned about the PICO(T) process.

****In your second discussion activity, you will examine the differences between EBP, research, and quality improvement.

  • Share the PICO(T) question you wrote for the exercise,      then compare your question with the PICO(T) question created by Vila      Health.
    • Did your question identify the same or different       PICO(T) components?
    • Was your question more or less clear and concise       compared to the one created by Vila Health?
  • Consider and discuss the intervention (I) in your      question and in the question created by Vila Health.
    • How would you determine if the suggested intervention       (I) in either question is evidence-based?
    • What additional actions or information is needed to       refine the PICO(T) question with a specific evidence-based intervention       (I)?
  • Reflect on what you have learned about the PICO(T)      process.
  • What components were the most challenging to identify?
  • In what ways can you  master the skills needed to create an appropriate       PICO(T) question?

Part B

  • Discuss two unique characteristics for each of the      three processes: EBP, research, and quality improvement.
  • Describe how the EBP process differs from research and      quality improvement.

Part C

Research and answer the PICO(T) question below.

  1. In patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome      (P), will the implementation of a pulmonary hygiene protocol (I) compared      with standard positioning care (C) improve weaning parameter metrics (O)      during the next three months (T)?

For your initial post, create a four-column table with the following headings:

  1. PICO(T) component.
  2. Best evidence design/method.
  3. Search terms.
  4. Sources of external evidence (databases).

Use the four columns to list the following:

  • Include each component of the PICO(T) question you      chose.
  • Identify, using EBP evidence levels, the study      design/method that would provide the best evidence to support the      intervention.
  • Define three different search terms you would use to      begin your search for the best evidence, based on the PICO(T) question you      chose.
  • Determine the most appropriate databases to perform      your search.
